30 Days of Video Games: Day 17

Day 17 - Favourite antagonist:

I remember going to a car-boot sale and buy 3 fantastic games (though I didn’t know it at the time). Those were Fallout, Freespace 2, and System Shock 2. I had never played the precursors of the latter two, however it turns out it was unnecessary. What stood out, as horrid as The Master was in Fallout and the Shivans were, System Shock 2’s nemesis was a tad more personal.

Whether it’s the release of the half-lobotomised monkeys from their cages in the labs, or the taunts over the tannoy with her synthesised, multi overlayed voice when you least expect it, SHODAN has just enough crazy and arrogance that (while she’d resent the comparison, believing herself to be an all knowing, immortal god) at the same time, makes her seem almost human. Comparisons have been made to both Hal 9000 though, she was very much aware of her actions at the time of commitment, and GLaDOS, however with much more malice.

A spiritual precursor to Bioshock (and it’s telling) I would definitely recommend you find a copy (it may or may-not be available to download somewhere) and play it if you like an intense and atmospheric shooter with elements of RPG thrown into the mix.
